Clothesline for Comprehension

We are in our “Spring is Here” unit in our Houtghon Mifflin curriculum, studying the story, Mrs. Mc Nosh Hangs Up Her Wash.  This story is always a big hit with the kids because she starts by washing her clothes and hanging them up to dry on the clothesline.  The story continues, and she washes and hangs up random and silly things to dry…

The kids laugh and laugh as she hangs up the silly things (and this is when I have a “teachable moment” about appropriate volume and length of laughing in class..)

I asked the kids to think about something silly they would hang up on the clothesline to dry.  I gave them a piece of blank paper and they drew a picture and wrote the word of what they would hang up.

The students had a chance to share their drawing with the class, and we were able to be creative, just like the story was!

LOVE that book. It is so much fun to read with the kids. Have you read Mrs McNosh and the Great Big Squash or Oh My Gosh, Mrs. McNosh? Both have the same sense of fun as the original.

I've never read that book… but when I do read it for the first time I'm so stealing this cute activity to accompany the book! Thanks for sharing!

I love your idea! I will have to try that. I have a washboard that belonged to my grandmother. I bring it in along with a bucket and we all get a turn "washing" the old fashioned way!!

Every year, my kids have always LOVED this book! They especially like the hanging underwear. Ha! 🙂 I love your idea to have the kiddos do a clothesline. What a great way to make it personal for them. Great job, Michelle!
