Basketball Fact and Opinion

In my class this year, I sometimes have a hard time keeping the boys engaged.  Unless it has to do with.....basketball.  What better way to have my students practice fact vs. opinion?  Make it basketball themed!  I found an amazing fact and opinion craftivity by Deb Hanson, and I put a twist on it to use it in my class (I asked her if I could share my twist and she said yes!).  

We are reading The Indian in the Cupboard and learning new vocabulary words as we go.  I also wanted a cute bulletin board for Open House, AND I wanted to make it engaging for my basketball boys.  And this is what happened...

I gave each student two basketballs.  On one they wrote an opinion about the book.  On the second basketball, they wrote a fact using one of our vocabulary words in the sentence.  I was surprised by two things:

1.  how they were still confused by what an opinion was in 4th grade

2.  how amazing their sentences turned out!

This was a great way to practice our new vocabulary words and to review fact vs. opinion!

Mother's Day Flowers

We had a blast making our flowerpot for Mother's Day.  I found this cute little Mother's Day craftivity from Across the Hall in 2nd Grade, and we made it for our moms!  The kids filled out the little sentence stems, and then I had them write a note to their mom on the back.  Take a look at how cute they turned out...

I had the students work on their Mother's Day craft when they finished early with an assignment.  It took us about two days to finish the craft.  I always have them write first, and then do the coloring!  They each wrote a little note to their mom on the back! :)

This favorite memory made me laugh... :)

My favorite unit that I've made so far is my Sweet Sums addition pack!  It is a no-prep pack all about addition and ice cream! :)

Mother's day is this weekend, and this is a little Cupcake Mother's Day Card that you can make with your students.  The top part is a cupcake, and you lift it up and there are cute little sentence stems for them to fill in.  Their responses are always so adorable! :)

Factor Flower Craftivity

I feel like I haven't had any time to blog lately and I am SO SORRY for being a slacker.  I am getting married this summer, and that is pretty much consuming all of my free time!  I wanted to share with you a little Factor Flower Craftivity that we did a couple of months ago when we first started reviewing factors! 

Each student picked a number to put in the center, and then each petal was a factor of that number.  It also included a worksheet to practice before making the craftivity, but I didn't have my camera that day, so I am just showing you the finished factor bulletin board. :)

For this activity, I had them factor all of the numbers that they already knew.  We went back through and helped each other with any factors that they forgot.  I made them chose a composite number, that way they had several petals.

This flower bulletin board really brightens up our room, and is a great way to display math in our classroom!
