Teacher Self-Care Tips

Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions but it can also be one of the most draining if you don’t take activve steps to preserve and pour into self care. Today I am going to share 10 tips on how to make sure you are filling your own tank before you pour into your students.

TIP 1: TREAT YO’ SELF

Treat yourself to a favorite beverage on the way to work.  This may seem trivial or silly, but having a refreshment that you look forward to enjoying on the drive to work is a positive thing to help you roll out of bed!

TIP 2: SET BOUNDARIES

Being a teacher is an interesting profession.  It’s demanding, and often people in this profession put others before themselves.  It is important to set boundaries on how much you work.  I set boundaries on how late I stay each day.  Two days a week I stay later than normal, and the other three days I stay 30 minutes after the bell rings.  I also take a day off on the weekend.  I suggest you find a rhythm that works for you!

TIP 3: USE YOUR SICK DAYS

I have never understood why people feel guilty for using personal or sick days.  Those days are YOURS and they are written into your contract to ensure you take care of yourself.  Make sure you are honest with yourself when you are feeling sick or run down, so you can stay home to rest up.  I have an emergency sub plans at school incase one of those sicknesses creep up on me unexpectedly and don’t have time to write sub plans.
